Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my data stored?

Your trips, timers, and preferences are stored locally on your device first, in local storage. If cloud backup is on (the default), the same data is also copied to a private, anonymous backup in the EU. See the privacy policy for details.

How do I transfer data to a new device?

The reliable way is Export/Import: go to Settings in the app, tap Export Data, and save the JSON file. On your new device, open Been There, go to Settings, tap Import Data, and upload the file or paste the JSON. Cloud backup restores automatically when your device's own anonymous identifier already has a backup, but a new install cannot read an old install's backup — Export/Import is the guaranteed way to move data between devices.

Can I turn cloud backup off or delete it?

Yes. Go to Settings → Data, where you can toggle Back up to cloud off at any time, or tap Delete cloud backup to permanently erase your backup. Neither action affects the data stored on your device.

I forgot to start a timer. Can I backdate it?

Yes. When starting a new trip, choose "Start Earlier" and set the date and time you actually arrived.

Can I edit a trip after it has ended?

Yes. Open the trip detail view and tap "Edit Times" to adjust the start and end times.

Does the app use my location?

No. Been There does not access your location. You manually select which country you are visiting.

Will my timers keep running if I close the app?

Yes. Timers are timestamp-based, not clock-based. The app records when you started and calculates elapsed time whenever you open it. Closing the app does not affect your timers.
